Honouring Innovation in Carbohydrate Chemistry
Established in 1970 and sponsored by Dextra, the RSC Dextra Carbohydrate Chemistry Award is one of the UK’s leading recognitions in the field. The award honours early- to mid-career researchers whose work demonstrates excellence and innovation in carbohydrate science. Previous recipients include highly esteemed scientists, such as Nobel Laureate Sir Fraser Stoddart, underlining the award’s global significance.
Dr Fascione’s Groundbreaking Research in Chemical Glycobiology
Dr Fascione is being recognised for his innovative chemical glycobiology approaches that explore and disrupt key biological mechanisms. His pioneering work on bacterial pseudaminic acids has opened new pathways in understanding microbial systems, with broad implications in biomedicine, infectious disease research, and drug development.
Award Presentation at the University of York
As part of this honour, Dr Fascione will receive the official Dextra Medal and deliver an award lecture at the RSC Carbohydrate Group Winter Meeting, taking place at the University of York on 22–23 September 2025.
A Distinguished Academic Journey
Dr Fascione completed his PhD at the University of Leeds under the supervision of Professor W. Bruce Turnbull. He later undertook postdoctoral research at Leeds and earned a Marie Curie International Fellowship, conducting advanced studies with Professors Stephen Withers (University of British Columbia) and Gideon Davies (University of York), both leading figures in carbohydrate and enzymatic research.
