Imino sugars
We have an extensive collection of imino sugars from natural sources available on
request. We can also offer semi-synthetic modifications of the natural products.
Those listed cover the most common natural products such as DNJ, DAB and
DMDP, which are all broad spectrum and potent alpha-glucosidase inhibitors.

We also have calystegines which are specific beta-glucosidase and galactosidase
inhibitors. Swainsonine is the best known of the alpha-mannosidase inhibitors and is
a bicyclic indolizidine alkaloid, as is castanospermine, an alpha- and beta-glucosidase
inhibitor.

The pyrrolizidine imino sugars such as the hyacinthacines are unusual amongst
natural pyrrolizidines in having a carbon substituent at C–3 making them nontoxic
in the liver and they are in fact much more common in plants than the better
known toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

The imino sugars can be very specific in their glucosidase inhibition, even, for
example, amongst alpha-glucosidases. Their stability is high even in biological
systems. Most appear to be readily bioavailable orally and are primarily excreted
unchanged in urine.
